Yahoo! Legal’s Patent Asset Development Group captures intellectual property that is created at Yahoo! and determines a best means of protection – consistent with Yahoo!’s strategic interest. In the fast paced Internet environment, Yahoo! recognizes that there is a need to balance both proprietary and open models.

About the Job

Patent Asset Development Intern would assist Yahoo! attorneys and business executives on facilitating the use of open source at Yahoo! The position involves working with Yahoo! programmers and developers in considering both the inbound and outbound use of open source software (OSS). Open source software is governed by a particular open source license. You would serve as a liaison between the Yahoo! legal and technical communities!

This is an unpaid, “for credit” only internship located at Yahoo!’s Sunnyvale campus.


Essential Job Qualifications

- What must an applicant know? Successful applicant must have working knowledge of software development – preferably gained as a programmer or software developer.

- What must he or she be? Successful applicant must have exemplary oral and written communication skills.

- What must he or she have? Applicant must have a basic understanding of intellectual property protection –patents and copyrights. Prior experience working with open source software (OSS) is particularly desirable.

- What skills are not negotiable, meaning what is needed on day one? Successful applicant must have the ability to offer meaningful and pragmatic input on the use of open source software, based upon a practical understanding of technical needs/requirements and underlying legal issues.


Degree - Attending Law School, with a background or undergrad/grad in Computer Science or Engineering.
