"NETWORKING IS KEY"
by Laurie N. Robinson*

Networking is the key to opening the doors to opportunity. Even if you are not looking for a job, it is important to keep adding to your rolodex and list of contacts. Below are four things to keep in mind when building your network base.

One: Making Initial Contact. The first step to building a network is making initial contact. One of the best ways to meet new people is to join a variety of professional organizations and to attend conferences, seminars and job fairs. You should greet people with a welcoming aura, firm handshake, eye contact, and a business card. If you are shy, practice makes perfect. Your confidence will surely build over time.

Two: Follow Up. Networking does not simply consist of collecting business cards or passing them out. It is extremely important to follow-up with the people you meet. A phone call works well; an e-mail is better; and a handwritten personalized note is probably best. Whichever mode of communication you select to utilize is fine. Just make sure to follow through.

Three: Cultivate Relationships. Point three is the most important, which people unfortunately fail to master. Remember that the earth was not made in one day, but seven (including the day of rest). Establishing a network is the same way. It is a process, which requires cultivating and nurturing relationships. It takes time, patience, and continuous follow-up.

Four: Seize the Opportunity. We have all heard the adage of "being in the right place at the right time." In order to make this saying materialize, you have to position yourself to seize the opportunity. WE should all actively reach out to at least one new person per month. We must all seize the opportunity that is presently before us.
